Next Exit Europa

Did you know that one of Jupiters frozen moons — Europa — has a hidden ocean? Data from recent missions suggest that this little world, which is about 3,100 kilometers across, has a sea of salty water underneath its rigid, icy and cracked crust. In addition, some scientists suspect that the jumbled areas of Europas surface, called chaos terrain, may be thin ice covering trapped lakes. Data taken by the Hubble Space Telescope also  show that water from the hidden ocean is spewing out into space.   How can a small, icy world out in Jovian system contain liquid water? Its a good question. The answer lies in the gravitational interaction between Europa and Jupiter produce whats called a tidal force. That alternately stretches and squeezes Europa, which produces heating beneath the surface. At some points in its orbit, Europas subsurface water erupts as geysers, spraying into space and falling back onto the surface. If there is life on that ocean floor, could the geysers bring it to the surface? That would be a mind-boggling thing to consider. Europa as an Abode for Life? The existence of a salty ocean and warm conditions under the ice (warmer than surrounding space), suggests that Europa could have areas that are hospitable to life. The moon also contains sulfur compounds and an array of salts and organic compounds on its surface (and presumably underneath), which could be attractive food sources for microbial life. Conditions in its ocean are likely similar to Earths ocean deeps, particularly if there are vents similar to our planets hydrothermal vents (spewing heated water into the depths).   Exploring Europa NASA and other space agencies have plans to explore Europa to find evidence for life and/or habitable zones beneath its icy surface. NASA wants to study Europa  as a complete world, including its radiation-heavy environment. Any mission will have to look at it  in context of its place at Jupiter, its interaction with the giant planet and its magnetosphere. It must also chart the subsurface ocean, returning data about its chemical composition, temperature zones, and how its water mixes and interacts with deeper ocean currents and  the interior. In addition, the mission must study and chart the surface of Europa, understand how its cracked terrain  formed (and continues to form),and determine if any places are safe for future human exploration. The mission also will be directed to find any subsurface lakes separate from the deep ocean. As part of that process, scientists will be able to measure in great detail the chemical and physical makeup of the ices, and determine if any s urface units could be conducive to life support.   The first missions to Europa will likely be robotic ones. Either they will be flyby-type missions like Voyager  1 and 2  past Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune,  or Cassini at Saturn. Or, they could send lander-rovers, similar to the Curiosity and Mars Exploration Rovers on Mars, or the Cassini missions  Huygens probe to Saturns moon Titan. Some mission concepts also provide for underwater rovers that could dive under the ice and swim Europas oceans in search of geologic formations and life-bearing habitats. Could Humans Land on Europa? Whatever is sent, and whenever they go (probably not for at least a decade),  the missions will be the wayfinders—the advance scouts—that will return as much information as possible for mission planners to use as they build up human missions to Europa. For now, robotic missions are much more cost effective, but eventually, humans will go to Europa to find out for themselves just how hospitable to life it is.   Those missions will be carefully planned to protect the explorers from the incredibly strong radiation hazards that exist at Jupiter and envelopes the moons. Once on the surface, Europa-nauts will take samples of the ices, probe the surface, and continue the search for possible life on this tiny, distant world.

World Religions Book Report Living Buddha, Living Christ ...

This paper is a book report on â€Å"Living Buddha, Living Christ,† written by, Thich Nhat Hanh. In this paper I will discuss the four themes; Mindfulness, Understanding, Interbeing, and Wisdom. I will define the themes, and explain how each theme listed is a part of my life and whether this theme, can be co-related along with my faith. Throughout this book, Thich Nhat Hanh talks about one being mindful. Anyone would define this term, being mindful means to acknowledge what you are doing, why you are doing it and so forth. Alternatively, mindfulness is also an agent of healing, just like The Holy Spirit, also being an agent of healing. It means to be understanding at a new level for yourself, to see from a new perspective and listen more deeply†¦show more content†¦So this concept is compatible with my faith. We can take this concept of understanding someone’s pain and trying to help them in any way we can. In connection to a theme discussed earlier, to be mindful one must be understanding and through that you can be in touch with the reality of life, or the Holy Spirit. Being understanding is a very big part of my life and I use it within my religion, to a reasonable extent. However, being understanding can be practiced outside of faith also. It is my major role to be understanding to someone, beca use in my near future I will be a doctor helping people get better, and before I treat someone, I must understand their pain and make sure I am giving this person the best treatment possible. Interbeing, is another theme within the book. Defined the term is to let go of any barriers and to get rid of them. These barriers could consist from keeping away people or certain goals. The practice of interbeing also, helps one get close to or touch the extraordinary world more profoundly or deeply. Throughout my life, I can say I have tried to let down barriers and be more open-minded and accepting, and allowing the fact of interdependence. However, this could be practiced more as it can benefit me greatly not only spiritually but mentally. Furthermore, interbeing also means human-caring, mindfulness and understanding so the concept is compatibleShow MoreRelatedHealth Care Provider and Faith Diversity Revised1722 Words   |  7 PagesFirst Draft Grand Canyon University Foundations of Spirituality in Health Care HLT-310V October 06, 2012 Abstract In this paper the author will explain what is faith and religion, and compare the philosophy of Sikh, Buddhism, and Jewish religions with that Christian and the author’s religion, include spiritual perspective and elements of healing, how necessary is to permit patient to practice their religious beliefs and rituals, and last, describe how this information could beRead MoreSimilarities between Beliefs and Philosophies from the World1637 Words   |  7 PagesChoice of topic: Religion has always amused me. Reference Re Same Sex Marriage Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Reference Re Same-Sex Marriage 2004 SCC 79. Answer: Citation and docket number of judgement The case, Reference re Same-Sex Marriage 2004 SCC 79 and its docket number is 29,866. The court heard a proposed reference of federal authority on recognition of same sex marriage in its Proposed Act that is an Act regard to recognize aspects of Legal Capacity for civil marriage. Such proposed act of federal government recognized by honble McLachlinC.J and his bench of J. Major, J. Bastarache, J. Binnie, J. LeBel, J. Deschamps, J. Fish, J. Abella and J. Charron. Facts of the case The case recalled a time when same-sex marriage controversy became a valid recognition in Canada. It was path of progress which formerly was a tortured stage for same sex due to the provision of Canadian religious Charter who only belief for traditional recognition of different sex marriage. Such progressive path ultimately weakens the federal government traditional beliefs too. However, Proposed Act of federal government came into light by changing stage of civil marriage in Canada. Before passing the proposed act, a matter covered by political mask by demanding the Supreme Court of Canada, through reference to allowing such Proposed Act (Fairlie and Sworden, 2017). Significant discussion on issue of division of powers It discusses a dispute on a subject of division of power between parliament and province as specified s. 91(26) and s. 92(12) of Constitution Act, 1867. Such dispute of distribution of legislative powers is examined by a doctrine on pith and substance (Oliver, Macklem and Rosiers, 2017). Legislation at issue In the matter of section 53 of the Supreme Court Act, the Canadian Parliament referred four issues concerning such Proposed Act to the Supreme Court of Canada in order to guarantee constitutional validity on same sex. Prior to this case, the issue regard to constitutional validity on same sex marriage had been accepted by several courts verdict by providing constitutional recognition to same sex marriage (Gerstmann, 2017). Analysis of the case The four submitted issues to Canadian Supreme Court analyses: Whether the Proposed Act lies within the exclusive legislative authority of the Parliament of Canada or not? Whether the section 1 of the Proposed Act, also extends to persons of the same-sex marriage and lies with a consistency with theCharter provisions or not? Is freedom to religion guaranteed bysection 2(a) of theCanadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protecting to religious officials from being obliged to perform same-sex marriages which are opposing to their own religious principles? Is the civil marriage of different sex consistent with theCanadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms? Identifies challenged legislation In response to issue number one, the Court held that section 1 of the Proposed Act was intra vires (lies) within the exclusive legislative authority of federal government whereas section 2 of proposed act was ultra vires (beyond) the exclusive legislative authority of federal government. In response to issue number 2, the Court ruled that section 1 of the Proposed Act, which state the definition of civil marriage as the union of two individuals, was held to be consistent with theprovision of Charter of Rights and Freedoms In response to issue number three, the Court decided that provision of Canadian charter ensures guarantee to freedom of religion and their belief. It would protect an interest of religious officials being compelled to discharge their official duty under section 2(a) of the Canadian Charter. Such performance of same sex marriage by religious officials shall not be contrary to their religious beliefs. The court decided to exercise its discretion not to respond towards a problem of the last issue as it may lead to ambiguity in a procedure of law. Review of the legal concepts as discussed in the judgment As per the outline of the present case, the judgement of Supreme Court throws a light on proper interpretation of constitutional norms and its values. Such affirmative ruling of Supreme Court ensures a proper weightage to the concept on division of power between federal government and province states of Canada by an examination of doctrine of pith and substance and concept of Canadian constitution as living tree under section 91(26) and 92(12) of Constitution Act,1867. Merits of the judgment Such rulings of courts lead to affirmative presentation of mainly four disputes to Supreme Court in respect of constitutional recognition to proposed marriage statute on same sex by federal government. Such proposed act consists of two provision that is section 1 of Proposed Act provide for (sanctity of marriage) as the legal union of two different individuals and excludes an association of all others. Section 2, Proposed Act states that this act shall not affect the principle of secularism that is every individual religious freedom or their belief will not infringed or violates under section 15(1) of Constitution Act, 1987 and Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Hogg, 2007). Conclusion Supreme Court places a safe zone by not interfering with a hypothetical benefit of federal government on its Proposed Act and traditional religious belief and practices of religious officials.
